the project is for a large family house for three generations to replace a 1970s project home on an elevated suburban block facing north west. two pavilions offset to each other house the parents and main living areas in a western pavilion, with the visitors, children and children’s living areas in the eastern pavilion, linked through the centre by a stair. the house of elevated on the rock outcrop with garage and storage under. each of the living areas has an adjacent outside area to allow for indoor/outdoor flow throughout the entire house. there is a winter courtyard to the north side, a summer courtyard to the south side and a children’s play area to the eastern end of the house and two large verandas to the western side, where the roof forms provide protection from the north west and western sun. the house demonstrates the techniques of echo-tech architecture using standard construction materials in unusual ways to achieve a highly wrought structure that has a high environmental performance whilst still exhibiting contemporary construction values with an emphasis on ‘build once’ for high technological performance. the house is built from materials with low embodied energy in a straight-forward and direct manner that expresses its fabrication and construction. |
