the lawson st design creates a threshold between the old and the new, which then releases into a new tall, naturally lit landing space straddling two levels. the front and the rear of the house are never read together, leaving the clients with the innocent small scale cottage to come and go by, with their private life lived in contemporary “tranquil” spaces full of light and breeze. the lawson st house is inherently environmentally sustainably designed. tall spaces are naturally lit as well as acting as thermal chimneys to move hot air out creating a suction, pulling cool air from below. specifically designed louvres over large glazed areas to the courtyard control the amount of sun into the building. white surfaces and diffuse sunlight with tall ceilings create an enhanced sense of space by allowing walls and ceilings to disappear
